Course Description:
In this hands-on practical course, the student will be instructed in the safe and proper use of hand tools and power equipment. The student will be expected to use, care and maintain various tools necessary to perform a plumbing related task. Students will be expected to measure, cut, and make a quality joint for all the various plumbing pipe materials and fittings including steel, copper, various plastics and glass using appropriate tools in a safe manner. Calculations for offsets of varying degrees, preparing and assembling of projects using skills learned from the other courses in the program will be demonstrated. Skills learned from the other courses in the program will be demonstrated by the student by drawing, designing and assembling a simple residential drainage, waste and vent system or part of such system either alone or with a partner.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
1. Choose the required personal protective equipment (ppe) for a specific job
2. Identify and select the proper power tool or hand tool for the required job
3. Identify and apply drainage terms and definitions
4. Apply theoretical learning to a practical application; measuring, cutting and assembling of different types of pipe
Teaching Content
1. Fundamentals of Plumbing
Trainees learn about the scientific underpinnings of plumbing. The class covers drainage, sewer and vent pipe systems and gives an overview of state plumbing codes.
2. Plumbing Installation and Repair
Trainees gain a great deal of knowledge about pipes and pipe systems. Topics discussed include appliance and fixture installation, pipe sizing, pipe installation, installation techniques and pipe system repair.
3. Plumbing practice
Trainees gain experience installing plumbing fixtures, wastes, drains, vents and water lines in this plumbing course. The hands-on experience provides the ability to apply the skills they’ve acquired in previous plumbing courses. Often, the theory portion of this class covers state laws and regulations for plumbing, which allows trainees to practice using proper techniques from the beginning.
4. Advanced Commercial and Residential Plumbing Repair
The curriculum emphasizes working with existing plumbing systems. Trainees further develop their skills in plumbing service and repair in commercial and residential settings.
